Sun-starved Brits are able to get that much needed dose of sunshine following Grant Shapps announcement that Portugal, including the Azores & Madeira, Gibraltar and Israel are among the 12 on the green list.

Further afield Brits can also go to Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Falkland Islands, it was announced today.

That means no quarantining when you return from your holiday to these 12 destinations. Although you will have to do a pre-departure test and take a PCR test on day 2 of your return to the UK.

Countries including Turkey, the Maldives and Nepal are on the red list meaning travellers to these destinations will have to stay in a hotel on their arrival back to the UK for 11 nights at their own expense and take all the necessary tests.

It is estimated this will be at a cost of £1750 for solo travellers.

It was also announced that from May 17, people who have had both vaccines will be able to use the NHS app to demonstrate their status.

Most of Europe is on the amber list which means people who travel there are expected to quarantine at home when they return and do testing.

The ban on non-essential travel is to be lifted on May 17 as part of the government’s programme for easing out of lockdown.

The reviews are taking place on a country-by-country basis every 3 weeks so if your holiday destination choice is not on the traffic light system now it could well be in 3 weeks. Although vice-versa if cases rise in your travel destination of choice it can easily rise to Amber or worse still, Red.

The system accounts for countries Covid cases and vaccine rollouts.
