Veteran war hero Sir Tom Moore, who raised £33m for the NHS, died today surrounded by his family after battling with pneumonia and Coronavirus.
Tributes have poured in, among them from the Queen and Boris Johnson, as the centenarian passed away peacefully at 4.05pm today.
A statement from Buckingham Palace, said: “The Queen is sending a private message of condolence to the family of Captain Sir Tom Moore. Her Majesty very much enjoyed meeting Captain Sir Tom Moore and his family at Windsor last year. Her thoughts and those of the Royal Family are with them.”
Number 10 lowered its flag to half mast as Boris Johnson paid tribute: “Captain Sir Tom Moore was a hero in the truest sense of the word.”
Sir Tom Moore has been described as a “beam of light shining through the tragedies of the pandemic” when he offered to walk 100 laps around his garden to raise money for the NHS to combat Covid.
Little did the veteran know his fundraising would well exceed his £1000 target by raising £33 million.
He did the country his greatest honour both during and after the war. RIP Sir Tom Moore.
