What is Domestic Abuse? Well for starters – It’s NOT your fault and you are NOT alone, as your perpetrator would have you believe.
Each year ESDAS (East Surrey Domestic Abuse Services) receives nearly 3,000 referrals and over 20,000 contacts from survivors and their loved ones in Surrey.
Domestic Abuse can be controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour or violence and abuse between family members or partners. Its more widespread than you think and can happen to anyone regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, orientation or income.
This month the #CutItOut Campaign was launched following a tragic murder. In 2017, weeks after confiding in her hairdresser, Kerri McAuley was killed by an abusive partner. ESDAS have been told by many hairdressers and beauty therapists that customers build up a relationship with them where they feel safe and comfortable – hearing many shocking parts of people’s lives. The charity want to offer these female professionals free training on how to be confident in spotting the signs of abuse and how to refer people to get help.
If you work in a Surrey beauty or hair salon email tina@esdas.org.uk for more information. A simple one-hour training session with ESDAS could help to save the life of a troubled client that walks through your door.
ESDAS, said on the difficult subject of domestic abuse, “Understand that it’s not easy to accept that a loved one can behave like this. Often because you cannot justify or explain the behaviour, you assume that it is your fault. You are not to blame for the abuse.”
High profile female celebrities including Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Reese Witherspoon, Mandy Moore, Halle Berry and Fearne Cotton have come forward with their domestic abuse stories shocking the press – including reports of broken bones and black eyes, although a lot of the women claim that the psychological abuse was more painful than the physical abuse by their partners.
Domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women and 2 women are murdered by their partners each week. This has to stop! See www.esdas.org.uk for help and advice.
The Surrey Awards 2024, rewarding “the best of the best” in Surrey is raising much needed funds for ESDAS this year as one of our chosen beneficiary charities.
