Oversized suit jackets and tailoring are making headlines this Autumn/Winter with celebrities including Emily Ratajkowski, Elsa Hosk and Kendall Jenner favouring the ‘bigger is better’ approach to styling.
What’s interesting is the look is not simply donning your boyfriend or Dad’s blazer. That would be too easy. The look involves careful tailoring where jackets are fitted to your dress size and shape but just have slightly longer arms and/or hemlines to give the illusion of being oversized.
Another bonus with this oversized look is that it can hide a multitude of sins (!) and the fact the overall silhouette it creates is larger – it gives the optical illusion that the rest of your body is slimmer. We’ll take that anyday!
Havre Studio, founded by Madeleine Frandsen, is one of the go-to designer brands for oversized tailoring in the celeb world. Her designs have been seen on the likes of models Elsa Hosk and Imaan Hammam this year.
Frandsen reveals she started the brand after moving to Mexico City in 2019 and stumbling across some tianguis (open air markets), where she scavenged through and bought some old men’s suits which she then started to customise with a seamstress.
“We tried to experiment a bit with the silhouettes,” Frandsen told Vogue. “I remember cropping a blazer just because I thought it looked nice when you can see the waist, and then we made a skirt with the rest of the residue fabric.
“I think there’s something amazing about taking something so classically masculine and making it a bit feminine.”
If you want to get your hands on Frandsen’s Havre Studio collection you are going to have to wait a while. This jacket pictured on Elsa Hosk sold out in minutes! A new up to date line of oversized and tailored classics is “coming soon” according to the designer.
In the meantime, we have found these gorgeous looks from Zara (red suit jacket £59.99 and beige suit jacket £69.99) and grey jacket from Collusion on ASOS for only £40.
Go big, be bold, be beautiful this Winter ladies.
