Every appointment at HARE & BONE starts with a consultation. If you are a new client or have been with us for years, we always begin with a consultation. We create space for you to discuss your concerns, to talk about what you would like from your hair and highlight any issues you have. This could include texture, scalp worries and how much time you have to commit to styling your hair at home. Do you spend an hour washing, drying and styling your hair everyday? Or do you wash and go? Either way is fine with us but by being honest, it will help us achieve a style that works for you. As well as your concerns, we want to know your lifestyle. Do you go to the gym every morning, then straight to work? Do you have three children to get to school each day? Are you out most nights? Does your workplace have a hair policy?

Have you recently separated? Or going through the menopause? Have you changed your diet? Quit your job? You might believe that these personal stories don’t play a part in your hair story, but as professionals, we recognise when there are changes happening in the lives of our clients.

As well as asking a lot of questions during the consultation, we will look at your hair texture and face shape. The condition of your hair can inform us on the backstory. How often it’s been coloured, how often it is washed, what type of home haircare products are used and how ofter heated appliances are used – without heat protection products. Hair has its own language and as the expert we understand it. Our role is to communicate your vision into a language that works for you hair type.

Integrity is one of our core values at HARE & BONE. By being honest with each other we can create the best results for your hair. We encourage clients to bring in visuals that represent your vision but when necessary we will highlight that going honey blonde will not automatically turn you into Jennifer Anniston, or Amal Clooney by going darker. And Kim Kardashian’s blonde didn’t happen in one appointment. And is, in actual fact, often a wig. These types of dramatic colour changes take months. It took six weeks for Billie Eilish to transform her signature green and black hair to blonde. Trust us when we say that it is achievable but will take three or sometimes four appointments to get there. Our expertise is looking out for you and the condition of your hair.

Another key element of the consultation is face shapes. These can be broken down into six categories; square, long, circle, heart, oval and diamond. When working out what face shape you have we look at the structure of cheekbones, jawline, forehead and chin. Once the shape has been confirmed we tailor the style requested to compliment your face. If we focus on a bob, then the following celebrity inspired face shapes will help demonstrate how the one style can be customised to suit everyone.

Diamond – Jennifer Lopez.

A blunt chin-length bob will add width while layers to tuck behind your ears will frame your jawline and highlight cheekbones.

Heart – Reese Witherspoon

A blunt cut shoulder-length bob that’s fuller at the end will fill out the area around the chin creating more overall balance.

Long – Victoria Beckham

Structured lines will break up the elongated shape so think side partings or straight, fuller fringes sitting just above the eyebrow.  A jaw or neck line length bob will widen the shape of the face.

Oval – Beyonce

Natural texture will highlight the best features. Bobs cut to lip level with accentuate a gorgeous pout.

Round – Emma Stone

Longer length bobs worn with a center parting will narrow the face whose deep side partings will help elongate it.

Square – Rihanna

Middle partings and cutting line below the jaw bone will slim the face, while adding a soft fringe that curves around the eye sockets will accentuate the eyes and soften the corners of the face
