Back and bigger than ever…
Marbella Rocks talks exclusively to Jon Besant, owner and resident DJ at History of House, on why they´re coming back to Marbella this year, bigger and better than before.
How did you get into DJ’ing and the nightclub industry?
The first time I heard my best friend mix two tunes together I was hooked. I saved enough money from my paper round and pocket money to get my first set of technics when I was just 15.
When did you set up HistoryofHouse?
The event came off the back of me doing a radio show celebrating the history of Manchester House music in the 1980s and I put together a 6500 sell-out party using 25 years of Manchester’s most known DJs.
What is the History of House ethos?
It’s all about the music! We don’t need to spend silly money on artists and like to mix the DJs with live PAs, and with it creating a non-stop party of anthems everyone knows.
What´s been your most impressive or biggest gig to date?
I would say the first one! 6500 will be pretty hard to beat but the first ones we did at Plaza Beach and Aqwa Mist last summer were pretty special too.
Last summer you held inaugural events at Plaza. Now you´ve added Aqwa Mist to your regular line up. How did this come about?
We have always had Aqwa Mist as our official HistoryofHouse after-party but this year we are going to be doing nearly every Friday with a current line-up of the best house artists.
What dates are you playing at Aqwa Mist?
Every Friday except the Spray weekends.
Which DJs are you bringing to Marbella this summer?
Brandon Block and Alex P are headlining the opening party on May 2nd at Plaza, K Klass Farley Jackmaster Funk and this one is HUGE… Todd Terry!!!!
Any other plans whilst your here in Marbella?
Sleep!
Why is yours the party to go to?
Because we give the customer something different to all the other venues in the port. It really is all about the party!
What´s everyone wearing?
Shorts and hopefully skimpy bikinis!
What´s everyone drinking?
I’m not sure about everyone else but if you happen to see me behind the DJ booth bring me a vodka, lime and soda!
How do you go about getting tickets?
You can get them online at Eventbrite, from the Ultima Promotions team or at Golden Tarts salon.
What´s the best thing about Marbella in your opinion?
The togetherness of the workers. Even the rivals are all close friends and from the moment I arrived last year I felt welcome and part of a very special bond.
How does Marbella compare to Dubai where you also do alternate seasons?
Dubai is very similar to Marbella in the way that people really make an effort and ooze class.
Any big plans/surprises this summer?
I think the line-ups in themselves are adding a surprise element to the port this year.
Favourite tune this summer?
Too many to think of just one!
Favourite track of all time?
The Last Rhythm Last Rhythm vocal mix… If you’ve never heard it, You Tube it and you’ll see why.
Best thing about being in the industry?
Being paid to make people dance and smile.
Worst thing?
The jealousy and the way people try to bring you down… But we can’t end an interview like this on a negative so… it’s the summer, leave all your problems behind and see you all on the dance floor!
