This Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist really knows how to tell a great story, turning from polar opposite subject matter like religion to drugs seamlessly. The stories main character Barrett Meeks re-evaluates his life after seeing a strange light hovering in the sky over Central Park in New York. He doesn’t believe in visions or God but can’t deny what he’s seen. Meanwhile his older brother Tyler, a struggling musician, uses cocaine to make him feel better to cope with his terminally ill fiancée and he needs heroin to help write songs. The characterisations make this new novel an exciting and modern read even though it is a profound unresolved novel about love.
Cunningham was the author of acclaimed 1998 novel “The Hours” (the film version won Nicole Kidman a Best Actress Oscar) and this is tipped to be his best work since. A must-have, gripping summer read for both men and women, old and young. There’s something for everyone in this emotionally piercing book.
