Beyoncé took to the Super Bowl 50 halftime show and surprised fans and supporters by delivering the most ground-breaking political message through her performance, dressed in a black leotard with a gold embellished jacket. The singer was surrounded by dancers who sported afros and black berets in reference to the Black Panther Party, a 60s group that advocated violence to correct racial injustice. At one point in the performance the back-up dancers and Beyoncé gave a salute and they later formed an X formation in which social media fans were quick to spot the reference to Malcom X. Furthermore after the show her dancers were filmed in a video that was posted on the “Black Lives Matter” Twitter page holding up a sign that read ‘Justice 4 Mario Woods’. Woods was shot and killed in San Francisco by police officers on the afternoon of December 2nd after he refused commands to drop an 8 inch knife he was carrying. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party, it was founded by Huey P Newton and Bobby Seale as a Black Nationalist organisation and one of the most influential civil rights group of the late 60s. Beyoncé has spilt fans and activists alike on this performance due to the mass controversy but some fans are portraying the reference as bravery. Others are saying if a white singer coming out on stage with dancers dressed in white supremacist Ku Klux Klan white robes and pointy hats there would be out and out war.
