The Japanese Grill at Beaverbrook is a gem in Surrey’s culinary scene. The elegant menu of delicately flavoured Sushi, Sashimi and Nigiri with the finest cuts of meat and fish from the Josper Grill, make for a remarkable dining experience.

The combination of impeccable service, a refined ambience and outstanding cuisine makes this a must-visit destination. Headed up by the internationally renowned chef, Wojciech Popow, who has worked with Gordon Ramsay, top London nightspot Yashin and was awarded Sushi Chef of the Year, ensures the cuisine and creativeness of the dishes at The Japanese Grill is second to none.

The menu boasts a diverse selection of traditional Japanese dishes with a modern twist. There are exquisite 8-Course Tasting Menus, that can be ordered with or without wine from as little as £95 per person. Speciality dishes include Turbot Nigiri with Wood Ants and Marigold Oil alongside seasonal favourites such as the Acorn-Fed Iberico Pork, which is roasted and smoked over Japanese Cedar Tree (pictured here) served on a decorative platter with a bonsai tree, a great touch!

For this February review we opted for The Bento Boxes (served Tuesday – Thursday lunch priced at £45 for adults and £25 for children) and includes Miso Soup, Spinach Salad and Sushi Sashimi alongside other delectable favourites. Great for those looking for a quick and cost-effective lunchtime treat. Our experience at The Japanese Grill was 5 star all the way, just like the award-winning Hotel, Spa and Restaurant on the sprawling Beaverbrook Estate. Read on to find out more.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Arriving at Beaverbrook’s The House where The Japanese Grill is located, you are instantly wowed by the grandiose building with its beautiful white stoned architecture and perfectly maintained gardens, overlooking picture perfect views of the Surrey Hills.

Beaverbrook was once home to celebrated publisher and backstage politician, Lord Beaverbrook (for which the estate is aptly named after) and was interestingly the part-time war residence for Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. During the Second World War, Churchill appointed Lord Beaverbrook as Minister of Aircraft Production, hence the nod to the wartime heritage located throughout the grand estate including the lone Spitfire statue and plaque bearing Lord Beaverbrook’s name.

OUR EXPERIENCE

As you walk through the hallowed halls of the The House at Beaverbrook to The Dining Room, all the staff are friendly, courteous and mostly dressed in Beaverbrook’s signature cricket jumpers with the famous WW2 inspired spitfire emblem.

Our helpful and attentive waitress on the day, Anya, showed us to our table where we sat with the beautiful sweeping Surrey Hills in front of us, a roaring log fire and walls adorned with beautiful butterfly pictures. After choosing our Bento Box orders, our Sommelier Antonio selected the most beautiful crisp, smooth white wine, La Meshua, that perfectly accompanied the Japanese cuisine.

We started with the Salted Edamame and Padron Peppers; a delightful fusion of classic Marigold Miso and Hanaho flavours that left our tastbuds tingling.

The Miso Soup was delicious; served with a homemade tofu foam with the spitfire emblem perfectly crafted on top. The Spinach Salad was glazed with Sesame Meso and served with Crispy Leeks – the dish was so fresh and full of flavour – you could tell the vegetables were picked fresh for the meal that day.

One diner opted for The Black Cod Miso; a signature dish at The Japanese Grill, which was standout. The cod was perfectly cooked, flaky and infused with a rich, sweet sticky glaze that was simply divine. Our other diner selected the Hay-Smoked Baby Chicken which was served with Shiso Meso and Lemon, which was so tender and cooked to perfection.

There was also 2 Corn on the Cob pieces, lightly coated in garlic, a generous helping of Soft Shell Crab in tempura batter with a tantalising spicy sauce accompaniment and delectable garnishes. All in all, 6 tantalising sections of the Bento Boxes were finished, we didn’t so much as leave a grain of rice, it was that good!

And as the Winter sun came out toward the end of the meal, we realised we were sitting next to a very famous Surrey-based Tennis legend which again reminded us what an ace service we were getting!

For dessert, we shared a trio of Mochi Ice cream, Green Tea, Vanilla and Caramel, which were encased in a succulent sweet sticky rice pastry which – like the Bento Boxes – really didn’t last long on our table!

IN SUMMARY

The whole experience was really a touch above any other fine dining establishment in Surrey. We would highly recommend a visit for a business lunch or just to share with friends or family. It really was “Game, Set and Match” to Beaverbrook’s The Japanese Grill.
