We all do it, scribbling away while on the phone to friends, family or work colleagues on a nearby pad. But what do these daydreaming doodles actually mean?<\/p>\n
Are they random? Apparently not.<\/p>\n
The hidden meanings have long been said to say a lot about your personality.<\/p>\n
Pen makers BIC teamed up with doodle expert and consultant graphologist, Tracey Trussell, to launch their \u201cDesign and Shine\u201d survey of 2,000 UK adults.<\/p>\n
The results found we doodle four times a week on average \u2013 for 15 hours a year in total and what they are supposed to mean.\u200b<\/p>\n
Criss-crosses can be a sign of anxiety, straight lines suggest someone is a \u201cno nonsense\u201d type and pointed shapes indicate an ambitious and competitive nature. Arrows mean going in a new direction in life while boxes mean pressure.<\/p>\n
Tracey Trussell said: \u201cDoodles are like little maps that guide us in the exploration of people\u2019s psyches. They are created casually \u2013 usually when the doodler is concentrating on something else \u2013 by the complete free flow of uninhibited symbols, live and direct from the subconscious.\u201d<\/p>\n
We spoke to leading \u201cdoodle expert\u201d Rachael Caringella from Tree Talker Art to decode these mainstay popular scribbles.<\/p>\n

ANIMALS<\/p>\n
Animal doodlers are usually sensitive. They may connect better with nature and animals than most humans. Different animals can also represent different moods and personalities.<\/p>\n
ARROWS<\/p>\n
Arrows often indicate feelings of ambition, drive and motivation. People who draw arrows and straight lines are often goal oriented and assertive.<\/p>\n
BIRDS<\/p>\n
Birds show the desire for freedom and flight. The bird is also a representation of hope and trust. Drawing and doodling birds also indicates a peaceful and optimistic mindset.<\/p>\n
BOXES<\/p>\n
Drawing boxes often indicates that you want control over a situation or that you are thinking through a problem. Squares, boxes and cubes often reflect that someone is efficient and analytical.<\/p>\n

BUTTERFLIES<\/p>\n
Butterflies are dreamy, romantic creatures that don’t like to be tied down. They are also great representations of transformation and rebirth. Drawing and doodling butterflies in flight can indicate your desire for freedom.<\/p>\n

CIRCLES<\/p>\n
Circles represent unity and peace. Since the circle is drawn\u00a0with round flowing movements it invokes a peaceful mindset. If drawing bubbles & circles you are likely to be a peaceful, well-rounded person.<\/p>\n

CLOUDS<\/p>\n
Fluffy clouds indicate a happy individual who is free and light-hearted. Clouds can also indicate someone is a day dreamer.\u00a0Angry stormy clouds can reveal depression, sadness and anxiety.<\/p>\n

DOTS<\/p>\n
Random dots indicate instability, anxiety and\u00a0anticipation. Dots in an\u00a0evenly\u00a0spaced apart pattern represent control, stability and creativity.<\/p>\n

FACES<\/p>\n
The expression of the doodled face speaks volumes of the mood of the doodler.\u00a0Certain facial features may be exaggerated that could provide additional meanings. Drawing full faces can indicate\u00a0feeling sociable, friendly and open.<\/p>\n

FLOWERS<\/p>\n
Doodling flowers indicates someone who is warm hearted and sociable. The shape of the petal can also reflect\u00a0a lot. A soft rounded petal will suggest a feminine softness, but\u00a0pointy petals show defensiveness. Drooping flowers indicate feelings of stress and burden, while vibrant flowers reflect joy.<\/p>\n

HEARTS<\/p>\n
Hearts often reflect that love and romance\u00a0is on the mind! These simple designs can also be used as petals and borders, reflecting love and beauty.<\/p>\n

HOUSES<\/p>\n
Drawing a house or your home shows feelings of nostalgia and the need for security. Drawings of happy looking houses with plentiful windows reflects a happy home life, while isolated windowless houses reveal loneliness.<\/p>\n

INTRICATE PATTERNS<\/p>\n
Highly detailed intricate designs are often signs of an introvert and someone with extreme attention to detail. They may have a hard time coping with sudden change or may at first seem inflexible with new ideas.<\/p>\n

MOONS<\/p>\n
The moon is a symbol of mysticism and darkness, and this doodle is common among women. Doodles of the moon often reveal an introverted personality, and a solid understanding of self.<\/p>\n

STARS<\/p>\n
Stars are often symbols of hope and optimism. To doodle stars shows that you are optimistic and are able to find hope in the darkest of situations. Stars, like the moon often reflect an interest in mysticism and spirituality.<\/p>\n

TREES<\/p>\n
Trees are often self-portraits of the doodler.\u00a0A sparse skinny tree can reflect feeling unseen or uneasy, while a happy tree full of leaves indicates feeling full of life.\u00a0\u00a0A tree surrounded with flowers is someone who feels full of hope and joy. A lone tree on a hill suggests someone feels isolated and lonely.<\/p>\n

TRIANGLES<\/p>\n
Triangles are a masculine shape based on the sharp angles. They show forward thinking and direct action. Triangles reveal a rational mindset.<\/p>\n
