Social media has<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>gone into<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>overdrive this month with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the shocking pictures posted by former Liberty X<\/i> singer Michelle Heaton showing her puffy face and bloodshot eyes at the height of her alcohol addiction a mere 20 weeks ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Michelle posted two pictures of herself \u2018before and after\u2019 saying: \u201cThis picture is not to shock, it was my reality! Ruined \u2013 immune system was shutting down. The second is me today \u2013 Saved \u2013 strong, happy, healthy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Luckily for the star, who rose to fame in 2001 after winning a spot in reality TV made band Liberty X<\/i>, she has overcome her demons and after a stint in rehab she is now 20 weeks sober. She felt compelled to speak out about the depths of her addiction as part of National Sober Day and National Recovery Month to help others. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Michelle went on to say, \u201cEncouragement of one day fuels more support and awareness, leading to long term sobriety. That\u2019s something worth celebrating! The opposite of addiction is a connection. Recognising this provides a model for future generations who will be my picture one! And then the second picture demonstrates how to enjoy life alcohol-free, the day will embolden future generations to say no to alcohol.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is a brave move for the star and publicly talk about her addictions. Michelle admitted at the height of her alcoholism she was drinking up to two bottles of wine and a bottle of vodka every day since 2018, until her rehab in May of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On entering the Priory rehab facility, Michelle, aged 42, admits the consultant rang her husband Hugh and told him he didn\u2019t know if she was going to make it such was the extent of her liver damage. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cMy liver was failing,\u201d she went on to say. \u201cI\u2019m four months sober now although back then I could never even imagine four days sober.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He is a recovering from alcoholism and has been sober for over a decade.\u202fIn 2015<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he described how alcohol affected virtually everything in his life, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have been able to have access to myself or other people, or even been able to take in other people, if I hadn\u2019t changed my life. I never would have been able to have the relationships that I do. I never would have been able to take care of my father the way I did when he was sick. So many things.\u201d Cooper\u2019s statements attest to the fact that alcohol affects more than just yourself \u2014 it also affects those around you.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The beloved star of the \u2018Harry Potter\u2019\u202ffranchise<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has struggled, like many other child actors, growing up in show business. While his character Harry was innocent and heroic, for Daniel Radcliffe, real-life challenges started affecting him, namely his addiction to alcohol. In a recent<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>interview, Radcliffe<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>stated how he came to the realisation that \u201cthe drinking was unhealthy and damaging to my body and my social life,\u201d and how he had become \u201ca recluse at 20.\u201d He even admitted how he used to drink before going on the set, and how he confided in co-star Gary Oldman who\u2019d also been<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>addicted to alcohol.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Despite<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>now<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>being sober, Radcliffe admits it\u2019s not easy to maintain his sobriety at events where there\u2019s alcohol. One of the greatest lessons he\u2019s learned is that he had to want a sober life for himself. He stated in the same interview, \u201cI had to stop myself. And stopping has shown me a world of happiness that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I didn\u2019t think was possible.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

His visitation rights with his daughters were temporarily suspended, forcing him to seek serious help for his addiction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In 2015, he said of his stint in rehab,\u202f\u201cIt is my responsibility to do the best I can and to take it one day at a time. But alcohol can become deadly. The scariest is when you go into a meeting and you\u2019re like, \u2018Where\u2019s Steve?\u2019 and they say, \u2018Oh Steve died last night\u2019. But you just met him yesterday! It\u2019s a very scary, deadly thing that needs to be addressed.\u201d Indeed, Hasselhoff takes his battles with alcohol much more seriously these days, and has also decided to transform his lifestyle completely with diet and exercise.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In a candid<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>interview with Oprah<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Winfrey,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Parent Trap\u2019 actress Lindsey<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Lohan admitted that she had used cocaine between 10 to 15 times, but alcohol was her biggest addiction. It’s hard to argue with her when you consider she has been arrested multiple times for incidences centred<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>around<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>drinking.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>She claimed that she didn’t even like doing drugs, but that she<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201chad to do it because it was the only thing that allowed her to keep<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>partying harder and for longer.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Woah, that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is definitely the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>mindset<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of someone who needs to take a step back from partying.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Lindsay has been in and out of rehab countless times but has now sober having forged a career running beach clubs around the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

When asked how many people he had sex with in a month, he answered, “Work out how many days and, here\u2019s a simple rule, triple it! I love it. I\u2019ve a very addictive personality.\u201d Brand’s commitment to sobriety is admirable though, especially when you consider it was one of the factors behind his divorce with Katy Perry. The singer was allegedly all about that party lifestyle, which, as you can imagine, would not sit well with a man who wanted to raise a family and move into a calmer phase of his life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>When talking about his former addiction, he reflected on his personality as well, stating, “I have friends who can smoke weed, swill gin, even do crack, and then merrily get on with their lives. For me this is not an option. I will relinquish all else to ride that buzz to oblivion.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There was a time, she admitted in an interview, when she couldn\u2019t make it 30 minutes without cocaine and would smuggle it with her on airplanes. With hard-earned sobriety now in place, she\u2019s a vocal spokesperson for mental health and addiction treatment causes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI had a Sprite bottle filled with vodka and it was just nine in the morning and I was throwing up in the car and this was just to get on a plane to go back to LA to the sober living house that I was staying at. \u2026 I had all the help in the world, but I didn\u2019t want it. When I hit that moment I was like, it\u2019s no longer fun when you\u2019re doing it alone.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Famous<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>rock musician Billy Joel has admitted to struggling with alcohol abuse<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>during most of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>his adult life. Drinking has, apparently, gotten in the way of his career and personal relationships. Fellow musician (and frequent touring partner) Elton John begged Joel to get treatment for alcoholism. In an early 2011 issue of Rolling Stone, John is quoted as saying that Joel needed to check into \u201ctough\u201d rehab, and that alcoholism was getting in the way of his life and career.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a recent interview<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Joel mused<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>about his past drinking habits: \u201cI don\u2019t know why I drank so<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>much I don\u2019t subscribe to AA,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I don\u2019t subscribe to 12-step stuff. Sometimes I just overdid it \u2026 but it wasn\u2019t consistent, it would be periods of time, during a divorce or something.\u201d Even if the drinking wasn\u2019t consistent, the binge-drinking Joel describes here is another form of alcohol addiction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Horror<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>novelist Stephen King struggled with drugs and alcohol for a considerable period of time. In 1987, King\u2019s family and friends staged an intervention, dumping evidence of his addictions in front of him. King immediately sought help and quit all forms of drugs and alcohol in the late 1980s. \u202fHe said, \u201cThere’s a thing in AA, something they read in a lot of meetings, \u201cThe Promises.\u201d Most of those promises have come true in my life,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We’ll<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>come to know a new freedom and new happiness, that’s true. But it also says in there, \u201cWe will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. And I have no wish to shut the door on the past. I have been pretty upfront about my past. But do I regret? I do. I do. I regret the necessity.\u201d King\u2019s not about to pretend he didn\u2019t have struggles with alcohol, nor does<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>think he should hide it, either. It\u2019s a part of who he is, and he\u2019s been sober ever since his family intervention.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

MEL GIBSON\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mel Gibson has publicly admitted<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to battling alcoholism for most<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of his adult life. He was arrested in 2009 for driving under the influence. In a previous 2006 arrest, made on the basis of suspected drunk driving, the arresting officer claimed he made anti-Semitic remarks. In the past, Gibson sought professional help, and checked himself into rehab for his alcohol problem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In 2016,\u202freported Gibson laying out the harsh reality that comes with thinking about quitting alcohol. \u201cThey say there\u2019s only three options: You go insane, you die, or you\u202fquit.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Mel Gibson has been sober for 15 years now and swears by the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-steps programme. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Aside from her fame as Princess Leia in \u2018Star Wars, Carrie Fisher was also well-known for her public statements about her health and addictions. In 2008 she even published a book about her struggles,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>called \u2018Wishful Drinking\u2019.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>She wrote<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cHappy is one of the many things I’m likely to be over the course of a day and certainly over the course of a lifetime. But I think if you have the expectation that you’re going to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>be happy throughout your life,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>more to the point, if you have a need to be comfortable all the time,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>well, among other things, you have the makings of a classic drug addict or alcoholic.\u201d Indeed, alcohol is often used as a coping mechanism, and Fisher describes \u2014<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in her usual humorous fashion<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>how drinking can make this worse.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Tragically, Fisher died of a heart attack in December 2016. It is thought that a relapse was partially to blame. Fans continue to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>mourn the loss of the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>actress.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
