<\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\nThe LaFerrari is not just the fastest Ferrari ever built, it is the\u00a0fastest car made by mainstream manufacturer ever to wear a\u00a0numberplate. Some will point to the Bugatti Veyron and note it\u00a0has even more power and takes even less time to reach 100km\/h,\u00a0but the former advantage is miniscule and obliterated by the\u00a0over half tonne of extra weight it carries, and the latter simply\u00a0a function of the Bugatti\u2019s four-wheel drive traction. In any real\u00a0world scenario, that Bugatti would not see which way this Ferrari went.<\/p>\n
Ferrari\u2019s new flagship stands at the centre of a new unholy trinity\u00a0of hybrid hypercars, flanked by the McLaren P1 and Porsche\u00a0918. All use electrical power in much the same way as a Toyota\u00a0Prius to boost a petrol engine, but to rather greater effect. And of\u00a0them all it is the Ferrari – the most powerful, lightest and most\u00a0expensive of the lot \u2013 that claims all the saloon bar bragging\u00a0rights to itself.<\/p>\n
So when you approach it, an insect-like study in scarlet from\u00a0some dystopian future dumped unceremoniously outside the\u00a0Ferrari gates, you naturally expect some pre-flight ceremony,\u00a0or at least explanation. But there is none. No one steps forward\u00a0to hand you a G-suit, neck brace, helmet or weapons-grade\u00a0sedatives. The door scissors open and as you peer inside, it looks\u00a0quite a lot like any other Ferrari cabin.<\/p>\n
Except it isn\u2019t. There\u2019s no elegant way in, so you sort of tumble,\u00a0grasping various bits of carbon fibre bodywork to control your\u00a0descent. Once in you try to adjust the seat but it doesn\u2019t move.\u00a0This is because you don\u2019t actually sit in a seat, but merely a\u00a0padded section of the car\u2019s structure. You don\u2019t move to meet the\u00a0car, it moves to meet you with not only the steering but the entire\u00a0pedal box telescoping in or out to meet your hands and feet. It\u2019s\u00a0so comfortable you wonder why more cars aren\u2019t made this way.<\/p>\n
The engine blasts into life. It\u2019s not a particularly\u00a0attractive sound at idle, but it oozes aggression. You\u00a0can summon up quite a number of different displays\u00a0on the TFT screen in front of you, all of which will\u00a0make you feel like a fighter pilot. I choose one with a\u00a0vast central rev-counter and a red-line at 9250rpm.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s easier than you\u2019d think to trickle out into the traffic,\u00a0largely because your very presence turns you in a red\u00a0carpet royal among other road users. In Italy where I\u00a0got to test drive the car, everyone wants to get out of your way.<\/p>\n
But driving it fast in public is an exercise in frustration\u00a0and futility. Even on quiet roads it is so quick it eats\u00a0the distance between one car and the next in barely\u00a0discernible time. So it feels like you\u2019re always in traffic.\u00a0And while overtaking is the work of a blink of the\u00a0eye, you can never get into a rhythm nor even start\u00a0to understand what this car will really do. With a car\u00a0like this it\u2019s not just your licence that\u2019s at risk, it\u2019s your\u00a0liberty.<\/p>\n
Happily Ferrari has a test track, somewhere the\u00a0LaFerrari is able to express itself fully. And I\u2019d like\u00a0to say my hour alone at its wheel on the circuit was\u00a0the most frightening experience I\u2019ve ever had in a\u00a0car, because that would seem an appropriate thing\u00a0to say. Except it wasn\u2019t. Forget the power, forget the\u00a0stats; forget the fact that there are places here it\u2019ll do<\/p>\n
280km\/h where no other Ferrari I\u2019ve driven will do\u00a0more than 230km\/h. Ferrari\u2019s yet greater achievement\u00a0is to take unprecedented road car performance and\u00a0package it in such a way that anyone with just a bit of\u00a0time, experience and understanding can exploit.<\/p>\n
And when you do, it\u2019ll take you to a place no other\u00a0road car can reach. Any car that can involve you so\u00a0much you start to feel part of the machine is a rare and\u00a0exceptional device. The LaFerrari does better than this:\u00a0it makes the machine feel like part of you. So much so\u00a0that when they hang out the flag that tells you they\u2019d\u00a0like their car back, and you slink back to the pits, out\u00a0of the red insect and into a normal road car, it is the\u00a0every day, ho-hum tin box that feels like the alien\u00a0creature, not the LaFerrari.<\/p>\n
Ferrari will build 499 LaFerraris and charge\u00a0\u20ac1.2million plus local taxes for each one. But don\u2019t\u00a0think about ringing your dealer, even if you\u2019re in that\u00a0league: Ferrari offered the cars only to its most loyal\u00a0customers and every one sold without its new owner\u00a0so much as sitting in it. They bet that Ferrari would\u00a0be true to its word and produce a driving experience\u00a0unlike any other the world had seen to this point.
