A statement from Buckingham Palace announced: “It is with deep sorrow The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.”
His Royal Highness, aged 99, “passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.” He was just two months before his 100th birthday.
He had been suffering ill health for a number of months with a pre-existing heart condition and a subsequent infection.
“Further announcements will be made in due course,” the Palace statement continued. “The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
Prince Philip was longest running consort in the monarch’s history and the oldest ever male member of the Royal Family.
Among his lifetime achievements was setting up the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, 13 years of active military service and being the patron of numerous charities including the WWF.
