San Juan, translated to Saint John, is one of the biggest\u00a0events in Spain. Every major town or city holds its\u00a0own fiesta to celebrate the shortest day of the year,\u00a0
June 23rd that also symbolises the start of summer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The events festivities\u00a0usually get under\u00a0way a few days before\u00a0where a massive\u00a0bonfire is collected\u00a0on the beach and giant effigies are\u00a0made by locals to be burnt on San Juan\u00a0night. On the 23rd June the whole town\u00a0comes to life as families and friends\u00a0gather to eat, drink, dance and enjoy\u00a0the party atmosphere. It is also a custom\u00a0to eat Moragas (grilled sardines) on the\u00a0beach.<\/p>\n

The roaring bonfires which usually\u00a0start about 11pm are then followed by\u00a0a impressive firework display that lights\u00a0up the whole coast, a spectacle in itself\u00a0if you have a good view of the coastline\u00a0from wherever you are planning to see\u00a0in the festivities. At midnight thousands\u00a0of revellers dip or even swim in the sea.\u00a0Not only because they\u2019ve had a few vino\u00a0tintos, but because San Juan has many\u00a0religious and pagan connotations.<\/p>\n

History<\/strong>
The festival dates back to the early 19th\u00a0Century but was formally constituted\u00a0in 1928 in Alicante. There are mythical\u00a0connotations associated with San Juan.\u00a0Also known as the festival of fire people
originally burned bonfires and jumped\u00a0over them to \u2018burn away any problems\u00a0they may have.\u2019<\/p>\n

In much the same way, the swimming\u00a0in the sea after midnight supposedly\u00a0recuperates refreshes and cleanses a\u00a0person. The tradition was to wash your\u00a0face and feet three times to be granted
three wishes and have a happy 12\u00a0months thereafter.<\/p>\n

Where to go<\/strong>
All the festivities are very similar so it\u00a0will probably depend mostly on your\u00a0location as to where you go. If you\u2019re\u00a0with a young crowd you can most\u00a0definitely count on Marbella\u2019s main
beach to be lively. It will be packed so\u00a0if you want a good spot get there early.<\/p>\n

Ocean Club also hold their own event,\u00a0which is ticket only but sure to be\u00a0hedonistic if that\u2019s what you\u2019re after.\u00a0Expect to see dynamic fire shows, guest\u00a0and celebrity DJ\u2019s and energy dancers.\u00a0One of the biggest beach parties is
held on the stunning beach between\u00a0Estepona and Marbella as sound\u00a0systems can be cranked up further\u00a0than the main Marbella beaches and\u00a0the parties go on till sunrise, if that\u2019s what\u00a0you\u2019re after. Marbella Rocks recommends\u00a0Sonora Beach and Heaven for this.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re with family and young\u00a0children we\u2019d recommend somewhere\u00a0quieter like Sabinillas, on the coast\u00a0between Estepona and Sotogrande or\u00a0Benalmadna, 20 minutes up the coast\u00a0on the carretera. These are much more
of a family event because of the beloved\u00a0siestas, you can find a lot of children\u00a0out \u2013 even though it goes onto the early\u00a0hours – families stay for the bonfires\u00a0and fireworks and do not start leaving\u00a0till 12.30 or 1am.<\/p>\n

This is also a good option if you want to\u00a0experience a feria atmosphere with fun\u00a0fair rides and entertainment on purpose\u00a0built stages for the event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
