This year\u2019s 87th<\/sup> Academy Awards, held on the 22nd<\/sup> of February in Hollywood, was a show-stopping and politically charged event, with the coveted gongs going to Brit actor Eddie Redmayne for \u2018Best Actor\u2019 and \u2018Birdman\u2019 for \u2018Best Picture\u2019.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Four-time nominee Julianne Moore finally won the \u2018Best Actress\u2019 award for \u2018Still Alice\u2019 while \u2018The Grand Budapest Hotel\u2019 scooped four awards in total.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This was, without a doubt, the most politically charged Oscars night ever with winners of the coveted awards using their acceptance speeches to highlight world causes, which were brought to light through the films they starred in.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Eddie Redmayne dedicated his \u2018Best Actor\u2019 award for the Stephen Hawking biography \u2018The Theory of Everything\u2019 to \u201call those people around the world battling motor neurone disease\u201d, before praising Hawkings in particular: \u201cIt belongs to one exceptional family: Stephen, Jonathan, Jane and the Hawking children.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Patricia Arquette, who scooped the \u2018Best Supporting Actress\u2019 award for her role in Richard Linklater\u00b4s \u2018Boyhood\u2019 spoke emotionally about the campaign for equal pay for women.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo every women who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation we have fought for everybody else\u2019s equal rights. It\u00b4s our time to have wage equality for once and for all, and equal rights to women in America,\u201d she said, fighting to hold back her tears.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jennifer Lopez was overheard in the audience saying \u201cYes, go girl!\u00a8 and Meryl Streep gave her a standing ovation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Next up was \u2018Birdman\u2019 director Alejandro Gonzalez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu, who appealed on behalf of Mexican immigrants.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just pray they (Mexicans) can be treated with the same dignity and respect of the ones that came before and built this incredible, immigrant nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While this was heartfelt and moving to many, his statement, \u201cFear is the condom of life. It doesn\u00b4t allow you to enjoy anything,\u201d can easily be hailed as the best quote of the night at this year\u00b4s Oscars!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

His speech prompted an outpouring of praise and pride for Mexico, with the hashtag #VivaMexico and #Inarritu trending on social media. His Oscar win marked the second year in a row a Mexican director has scooped the top prize (Alfonso Cuaron also won for Gravity in 2014).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the politically motivated night, \u2018The Imitation Game\u2019 screenwriter, Graham Moore, spoke movingly about depression and suicide while collecting his Oscar for \u2018Best Adapted Screenplay\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried to commit suicide at 16 and now I’m standing here. I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she doesn’t fit in anywhere.\u00a0You do. Stay weird. Stay different, and then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage please pass the same message along,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He was backed up by the winner of the \u2018Best Documentary\u2019 award Dana Perry, who mentioned that her son had killed himself, urging the billions of Oscars watchers to \u201ctalk about suicide out loud.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Moore went on to stand up for equal rights for gays. Referring to the tragic news that Alan Turing (the subject of the film who solved the Enigma Code) was prosecuted for homosexuality and killed himself at the age of 41 in 1954, before ever receiving recognition of cracking the code. So it seems that the majority of Oscars winners used their time in the spotlight to highlight important issues. \u201cWhere was all the fun?\u201d we hear you say.<\/p>\n

So luckily, it wasn\u00b4t all serious as Marbella Rocks highlights the BEST<\/strong> and MOST SCANDALOUS<\/strong> bits from the Awards ceremony and all the GOSSIP <\/strong>from the after parties!<\/p>\n

Dakota Johnson ripped into her Mum. \u2018Fifty Shades of Grey\u2019 star Dakota and mother Melanie Griffith were being interviewed on the red carpet, and despite Melanie saying she was proud of her daughter starring in the soft-core BDSM movie, she confirmed that she would not see the film. Dakota retorted, \u201cYou can watch it.\u201d Her mum refused so she turned and started swearing. It\u00b4s bleeped out but looks like she said \u201cJesus Christ!\u201d Ouch.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Brit actor and Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch wasn\u00b4t best pleased with the \u201cno drinks in the auditorium rule\u201d during the Oscars night and snuck in a hip flask of whisky. The bold actor didn\u00b4t even try and disguise it when the cameras panned in on him. Instead he held up his flask as if to say \u201cCheers!\u201d Proper lad!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Brit Richard Linklater\u00b4s film \u2018Boyhood\u2019 was beaten by \u2018Birdman\u2019 for \u2018Best Picture\u2019 and social media and Oscars pundits are calling this \u201cthe biggest snub in Oscar\u00b4s history\u201d. Linklater\u00b4s film was shot over 12 years and shows the trials and tribulations children face growing up. Nominated for six awards (with many expecting it to clear up at this year\u00b4s awards) it took home only one for Patricia Arquette in the \u2018Best Supporting Actress\u2019 category.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sir Elton John hosted his annual Oscars viewing party with the likes of Miley Cyrus and Kylie Minogue in attendance. The charity event raised millons for his AIDS Foundation Charity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Was it the night of the no knickers? \u2018Vanity Fair\u2019 magazine held the main Oscars after-party and the majority of female leads changed into something less formal for this. Rumour has it that the plethora of lace and strapless gowns required a lot of female starlets to go commando. Rita Ora, Jennifer Lopez and Heidi Klum\u00b4s were the most revealing.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris wasn\u00b4t a patch on his predecessor Ellen De Generes. He attempted a rather out there joke on all the \u201cvery white\u201d list of award nominees saying, \u201cTonight, we honour America\u00b4s best and whitest. Sorry, brightest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luckily it got better for the comedian and actor when he decided to strip down to his underwear to honour Michael Keaton\u00b4s character in \u2018Birdman\u2019 revealing a rather gorgeous and toned body and proving he\u00b4s game for a laugh.<\/p>\n
