Our cover star, American singer and songwriter Katy Perry – real name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson – has been making waves across the music, fashion and film world since her first breakthrough with ‘I Kissed a Girl’ back in 2008.

This month, Katy is back with her seventh studio album ‘143’ on September 20th and it promises to be a belter filled with upbeat, dancefloor classics. The lead single ‘Woman’s World’ was released on July 11th to huge fanfare and the second single ‘Lifetimes’ released on August 8th has been a hit with fans too.

It’s been a 4-year break from the US pop princess to release ‘143’ following her epic ‘Smile’ album in 2020.

Katy is known for her wild and colourful music videos, she likes to reflect the personality of the songs and her emotions through fancy dress and storytelling from the Egyptian theme in ‘Dark Horse’ and a confused nerd in ‘TGIF’ which is why her diehard fans never fail to support her.

However, Katy had setbacks prior to becoming the star she is now, having been dropped by Columbia and Def Jam she was signed to Capitol Records in 2007 as they saw potential in the breakthrough musician. Katy is now billed as one of the best-selling female artists, having sold 143 million records worldwide. Aptly, the name of her new album!

LOVE LIFE

Katy, like many female pop queens, has had an array of men falling at her feet including Jennifer Aniston’s ex John Meyer.

Her unlikely two-year marriage with Russell Brand seemed like a match made in heaven (and it appeared that Katy had tamed the untameable!) However, the spilt in 2011 came as a shock as he asked her to file for divorce…through text message (!) and they have not exchanged many words since then.

“I don’t want to end up bittersweet. I have to evolve, I have to continue to push people’s perceptions of me,” the singer explained.

She is now happily engaged to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor Orlando Bloom, whom she met in 2016. They have a three-year-old daughter together called Daisy Dove. Bloom said in an interview this year: “I fell in love with Katheryn, this girl from Santa Barbara. And by the way, parents, pastors, living on food stamps,” he said. “We’re not talking glamorous, Montecito.”

He went on to say that he wouldn’t change their relationship for anything.

“Because we’ve got these two giant careers and lives, and hers is even, you know… it’s like a universe sometimes,” he said. “But I think I just keep coming back to her and trying to hold her hand and walk her back to the sand pit and be like… we’re just ‘gonna build a sandcastle.”

FASHIONISTA

Aside from her passion of music, Katy has a natural flare for fashion whether she is trending neon hair or boho glamour, she is always ahead of the game. If you take a look at her fashion from red carpet awards to a casual day in LA she likes to stand out from the crowd.

Katy Perry was recently named the face of H&M’s holiday campaign. Her red lip and red bowed hair made her the star contender for the brand. She has also fronted campaigns for the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Adidas and Just Eat.

FEUD WITH TAYLOR

Katy Perry is not one to shy away from public feuds either, everyone is aware of her ongoing battle with Taylor Swift! The former friends have constantly been shaming each other on social media with Katy following the account ‘Slutty Taylor Swift’ on Instagram and Taylor apparently wrote Bad Blood in dedication of Perry herself.

The spat began after Katy allegedly stole some of Taylor’s dancers, she felt betrayed by the dancers but it was allegedly reported the dancers were Katy Perry’s beforehand. The duo have now kissed and made up though and have released a song together.

FUTURE PLANS

The plans for Ms Perry’s future have no signs of stopping, Katy has widened her expanding set of skills and has recently teased a release of a new video game app Katy Perry Pop. The colourful game features a cartoon version of the singer which guides players along to reach their musical dreams, the animated app follows in the steps of Kim Kardashian and Demi Lovato who have both also got their own games. With a mass of success under her belt, fans can expect Katy to continue to surprise us with her impressive list of talents.

Katy Perry will be performing at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on September 11th, the Rock in Rio Festival on September 20th and the 2024 AFL Grand Final on September 28th.

There are no plans for a tour yet, but fans are waiting for it to be announced soon.
