So, the age old question- does size really matter? And does size really <\/strong>matter in the wine world? I’m afraid to say, yes it does! But it’s not <\/strong>
\nnecessarily the bigger the better.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m sure you have seen, or tasted, wine from different sized bottles. Did <\/strong>you ever wonder if it was just for show or convenience, or did it affect <\/strong>
\nthe flavour? Well, it’s a combination of them all really and I thought you <\/strong>might be interested to know why.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here are the main size differentials for Bordeaux wines (yes, there are
\nmore sizes and exceptions for different areas just to confuse you!):<\/p>\n

Piccolo (small in Italian) 1\/4
\nDemi (half in French) 1\/2
\nStandard (750ml) 1
\nMagnum ( ‘Great’\/Extra large in Latin ) 2
\nMarie-Jeanne 3
\nDouble Magnum 4
\nJeroboam 6
\nImperiale 8<\/p>\n

And with Champagne, they get EVEN BIGGER!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Salmanazar 12
\nBalthazar 16
\nNebuchadnezzar 20
\nPrimat\/Paramount 36
\nMelchizedek 40<\/p>\n

You are probably also wondering where all the strange names came
\nfrom? Well, these are named after historical Kings and Biblical
\nCharacters.<\/p>\n

So, does size really matter? Well the bottle size preferred by Bordeaux
\ncollectors is the Imperiale (that\u2019s 8 standard bottles). This is because it
\nhas the best air : wine ratio. Such a small amount of air is present
\nbetween the cork and the wine; this allows the wine to develop much
\nmore slowly, thus producing much more exquisite flavours and balance
\nto the wine overall.<\/p>\n

With Champagne, the favoured bottle is the Magnum. This is usually the
\nlargest bottle in which Champagne itself is fermented in (sometimes,
\nrarely, the Double Magnum). Champagne is fermented within the bottle
\nand the flavours develop over time.<\/p>\n

The maturation of Champagne, or oxidisation, can occur much more
\nslowly in the Magnum sized bottle. This is because there is less air per
\nlitre than in the standard bottle, so there is a slower evolution of flavour
\nand this creates a more elegant and balanced wine. So now you know
\nthe science, you\u2019ll realise that it is best to stay well clear of anything
\nlarger than a Magnum. They are just for show as the bottles have had
\nsmaller bottles poured into them\u2026.unless of course your name is Lewis
\nHamilton!<\/p>\n

Also there is a danger with the smaller, 1\/4 or 1\/2 size bottles of
\nChampagne. These are great fun and very handy for picnics and in
\nnightclubs or bars. They sell fantastically well. But please don’t think
\nthese will age very well like the other bottle sizes- they won’t. They don’t
\nstay fresh for very long, so drink them ASAP!<\/p>\n
