The African coastline appears so close you can almost smell\u00a0the spices drifting over from the street bazaars of Morocco.\u00a0You know now that you are only a few miles from one of the\u00a0most remarkable places in all of Europe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you park up in the Old Town you can explore\u00a0the maze of narrow cobbled streets that\u00a0characterise this beautiful seaside town. You can\u00a0take a visit to the old castle and let your imagination\u00a0wander back a couple of centuries to the ferocious\u00a0battles that took place here. So close\u00a0is it to the African continent that\u00a0you can actually see houses and cars\u00a0in neighbouring Morocco. From\u00a0sunrise to sunset, Tarifa\u2019s beaches are\u00a0a haven for surfers, hippies and sunworshippers. \u00a0Even after sundown the\u00a0beaches are a hive of activity, with\u00a0beach parties keeping the party going<br \/>into the early hours and even into the\u00a0following afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The people here are friendly. Both\u00a0visitors and locals alike always have\u00a0broad smiles on their faces and many\u00a0a traveller may find themselves being\u00a0treated like a long-lost friend by\u00a0complete strangers. And this is what\u00a0helps make Tarifa the unique place it\u00a0is: a place where there is no snobbery\u00a0and where everyone is equal and\u00a0welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Up until around 35 years ago, Tarifa\u00a0was a very different place. The\u00a0strong coastal winds of the small\u00a0fishing village \u2013 regarded as a curse\u00a0for centuries \u2013 were the bane of the\u00a0Tarifenos lives. Sand storms and the\u00a0constant billeting from the wind<\/p>\n<p>is said to have been the reason for\u00a0Tarifa having the highest suicide\u00a0rate in all of Spain. But it was these\u00a0very winds that were to turn around\u00a0the fortunes of Tarifa. Word spread\u00a0among the then small worldwide\u00a0surfing community about a town in\u00a0southern Spain that had waves akin\u00a0to those of Hawaii, the surfers Mecca. \u00a0They began to descend on Tarifa,\u00a0bringing their laid-back attitudes\u00a0and friendly ways with them. Word\u00a0again spread, and soon the beaches\u00a0were filled with surfers, wind-surfers,\u00a0bikers and hippies all enjoying the\u00a0sunshine and waves. Its proximity to\u00a0Africa made it a much fought over\u00a0site and Tarifa has been controlled by\u00a0many different powers since it was\u00a0given its name in 710 when Muslim\u00a0leader Tarif Ben Malluk landed there. \u00a0Visitors are drawn to Tarifa not just\u00a0for the watersports but also for the\u00a0rich history that is still evident in the\u00a0town.\u00a0The Old Town is surrounded\u00a0by medieaval gates and walls, and the\u00a0castle looking out over the African\u00a0coastline is the oldest surviving castle\u00a0in all of Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, Tarifa is a far more\u00a0cosmopolitan place that it used to be. \u00a0There is the bustle and buzz of bars,\u00a0cafes, seafood restaurants, market\u00a0places and laid-back chiringuitos. All\u00a0sorts of unusual clothing, jewellery\u00a0and craftwork can be picked up in\u00a0one of Tarifa\u2019s many small stores\u00a0littered around the Old Town,\u00a0and hip vegetarian cafes serve up\u00a0refreshing alternatives for the more\u00a0environmentally-minded visitor.<\/p>\n<p>What really makes Tarifa the\u00a0bohemian and alternative place\u00a0it is are the people. The town has\u00a0an enviable international feel to it. \u00a0Like-minded Spaniards, Italians,\u00a0Dutch, Swedes, Germans, Africans\u00a0and South Americans among many\u00a0others come together in Tarifa. And\u00a0during the summer months Tarifa\u00a0is definitely the \u201cin\u201d place to be on\u00a0the coast. Make-shift parties and\u00a0summer chill-outs are the norm\u00a0on the beaches, and the town is the\u00a0place where people can \u2013 among\u00a0other things \u2013 watch a roof-top\u00a0movie projected onto a whitewashed\u00a0wall, have dinner while watching\u00a0a meteor shower or take part in a\u00a0roadside game of volleyball.
