MEMORIES FROM MOTHER’S DAY
Mother’s Day was first officially celebrated in 1910 in West Virginia in the US. Anna Jarvis spent 5 years campaigning to get the day established as a recognised holiday to commemorate the death of her own beloved mother and to celebrate mother’s around the world as, “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.”
Due to the campaign efforts of Anna Jarvis, in 1914 US President Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation creating Mother’s Day as a national holiday.It is now celebrated across the world in either March or May. In the UK it’s March 15th and in Spain it is May 3rd.
However it was not a happy ending for Jarvis. She was not happy with how the big card companies like Hallmark got on board and monetised the event, saying it was the exact opposite of what she wanted the day to be about, love not money. She was arrested for breach of the peace after attending rallies and campaigning against these big PLC’s. She sadly died in 1948 without ever being a mother herself.
