Amazon Fresh in Ealing is the tech giant’s first “just walk out” shop in the UK and is paving the way for tills to be obsolete in supermarkets.
Visitors to Amazon Fresh literally scan a smartphone app when entering and are automatically billed when leaving. They don’t even have to scan individual items like rival Tesco and Marks & Spencer’s offering.
Although the 2,500 square foot Ealing store is a lot smaller than a conventional supermarket it still manages to stock hundreds of own brand items and third party products.
There is also a stand to return Amazon products bought online by scanning a code without having to repackage or relabel the item.
Amazon Go in the US launched in 2018 and has already opened 25 stores.
The tech giant is hoping to change the way we shop for groceries altogether and as such are offering their “just walk out” technology to other businesses should they want to take it up.
Having just launched today it is unclear whether Brits will take to the new Amazon shopping experience like our US counterparts but as the experience saves time and could save a lot of money – it is predicted to do well by experts.
