While we’ve so far reviewed only best selling authors in this sector, this debut novel from the utterly promising KT Medina is well worthy of making our book review final cut.
Medina, speaking from real life experience as a troop commander with the Territorial Army and as a consultant to mine clearance charities in Cambodia, writes a fascinating murder mystery story that both captivates and enthralls. She also manages to combine a whole series of current issues such as slavery, sexual tourism, domestic violence and child abuse into one punchy novel. In addition, she manages to do so in a way that doesn’t feel like she preaching about these evil subject matters, as so many authors can do.
The story also tells you a great deal about topics that are hot one minute and dropped like hot cakes the next. For example when Princess Diana was alive mine clearances graced the front pages of hundreds of newspapers, now the mine charities are unlikely to get a few column inches.
If you are after a thought provoking and genuinely gripping novel, this debut from Medina is well worth it. Let’s just hope she hasn’t raised the bar too high for her next book.
