A gripping, science fiction thriller that sees Tom Cruise in the lead as William Cage fighting an alien race that has inhabited earth. While the plotline may sound far-fetched and “an overdone format” by Hollywood standards – ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ is different. Cage is killed off at the beginning of the film when he is dropped on a battlefield into what amounts as a suicide mission. He is stuck in a time-loop that forces him to face the same brutal battle over and over. As each combat mission reoccurs he is learning greater skills, alongside the immensely talented Emily Blunt who plays a Special Forces Officer. Edge of Tomorrow has been praised by critics for its superb writing and direction. Empire called it, “A playful and frantic science-fiction twister which mimics the best (Aliens, The Matrix, Groundhog Day) while offering something fresh and, most importantly, thrilling.” The film, directed by ‘Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman, has generated over $100m at the US box office.
