Richard Ashcroft, lead singer of The Verve, appeared on Sky’s Soccer AM on Saturday when a mysterious sachet that looked like it contained white powder fell from his black sock onto the floor.
Ashcroft picked it up and discarded it but the damage was already done and caught on camera. Ashcroft sailed through the interview ranting about ‘X Factor’ and told budding musicians to “turn your telly off get hold of your guitar, your keyboard, your drum machine and spend that hour making your own stuff” rather than watch Simon Cowell’s show.
After his appearance went viral and speculation arose about the contents of the white sachet the 47-year-old ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ singer took to social media to say, “Just a quick message to a couple of you trolls on Twitter who are making a name for yourselves out of me – and also people moralising and virtue signalling,” he said in the video he uploaded. “Number one: Cocaine and I have had no relationship for decades. Number two: Don’t you ever surmise what has fallen out of my pocket. And, don’t bring my children into it. You’re on thin ice.”
That told them. He also, for the first time on record, publicly admitted he did drugs in the process. Ooops.
