Head over to The Boardwalk on Paseo Maritimo to enjoy a bit of glitz and glamour at the races while helping a very good cause. This year, the 4th year in a row, organisers Kara Caradas and Sera Jane (pictured) have decided to raise funds for Samantha Dorricott in South Wales who tragically lost three daughters in devastating circumstances; an involuntary drug overdose, complications during birth and a house fire – this is before any of them had reached their 22nd birthday. Samantha is now caring for her two young grandchildren Jensen, 5, and Chantelle, 4, on her own. Sera has already raised enough funds to pay for flights and accommodation so anything raised on the day will go towards making their first family holiday abroad all the more memorable. The day, sponsored by Pure Skin Boutique Spa and Angela McAllister with Evento Shop and Brian Mcculen events donating the decorations, will consist of a fashion show from Fabric and singers Tabitha and Isabelle have kindly donated their time to perform. Tickets for the 3-course meal with half a bottle of wine will only cost €50 per person. There is also an after party at Becketts nearby. Email to book tickets.

June 23rd

San Juan is one of the biggest events in Spain’s calendar. Every major town or city holds its own fiesta to celebrate the shortest day of the year, June 23rd that also officially symbolises the start of summer. The festivities usually get under way a few days before where a massive bonfire is collected on the beach and giant effigies are made by locals to be burnt on San Juan night. On the 23rd June the whole town comes to life as families and friends gather to eat, drink, dance and enjoy the party atmosphere. It is also a custom to eat grilled sardines on the beach. The roaring bonfires which usually start around 11pm are then followed by an impressive firework display that lights up the whole coast, a spectacle in itself if you have a good view of the coastline from wherever you are planning to see in the festivities. At midnight thousands of revellers dip or even swim in the sea not only because they’ve had a few bevvies but because San Juan has religious and pagan connotations and the water supposedly cleanses them. Enjoy your fun filled night of San Juan at numerous beach locations up and down the coast.
