The world famous RC44 Championship Tour is coming to Sotogrande for the first time ever on June 24 to June 29.
The RC44 is a 50-50 amateurs and professionals split in an eight person crew with racing taking place over five days; one day of match, followed by four days of fleet racing. All boats have to be made to a strict one-design racing format so they sail with a level playing field.
Match racing is compelling to watch and a race can be won or lost before the start signal has even sounded. The fleet races are very short, intense, action-packed affairs with boats frequently separated by just seconds at thefinish line.
The RC44 Championship Tour began in the Caribbean in February before the fleet travelled across the Atlantic to Europe where they raced in Portugal in April and Sweden in May before hitting the exclusive Mediterranean port of Sotogrande in Spain, located between Gibraltar and Marbella. The final leg sees the fleet travel to Muscat in Oman in November before the overall winner is crowned.
There are 14 teams representing nine countries in the RC44 Championship Tour. There is also an onboard 9th man competition where a VIP guest can actually sit on board during a race.
The RC44 Tour was launched in 2005 by one of one of sailings most recognizable icons Russell Coutts, a four-time winner of the prestigious America’s Cup.
