Welcome to September. This month always feels like a fresh start to me, a time to reinstate healthy rituals that have slipped over the summer months and an opportunity to focus on your remaining goals for the year. It is also a good time to look at new trends and plan ahead for Autumn. This season there are three key trends that will begin to filter through as the months develop.
The first is the colour copper. Summer was dominated by blondes, as always and the impact of ‘Barbie’ has been huge this season. Now we’re beginning to see a move away from bright blondes to cinnamon-inspired hues. Emily Ratajkowski kick started this with her recent warmer copper tones but Kendall Jenner opted for a similar shade early 2022, and of course, women such as Julianne Moore, Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone have been rocking these tones forever. Copper hair can look great on many people and works well with warm undertones in the skin. If your skin has hints of yellow or golden hues, copper hair can enhance your natural complexion and the warm tones can create a lovely contrast against fair skin or complement a sun-kissed complexion. I would recommend using Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner for beautiful colour to keep colour fresh. And Just Like That…..the bubble perm is back. Even though the season has come to an end, the Carrie Bradshaw effect lives on. Packed with volume from root to tip, the movement of these curls is perfect for those with thin or lacklustre hair. This style works on all hair lengths but the way to create them will vary. Shorter hair will need curlers and longer lengths can use tongs or skinny wands. The secret is not having each section identical in size and curl, but it must run from root to tip. Begin by using a heat protection spray such as KMS ThermaShape Spray and once the curls are cool – run a wide-tooth comb through the hair for a modern, softer look.

While chunkier panels of colours are making a comeback, (think less Geri Halliwell and more, softer sections) it doesn’t always need to be vertical. Since our last column in Spring, a lot has happened. We have introduced a selection of memberships, including our Clipper Club. We’ve launched our sustainable colour range, celebrated PRIDE, welcomed Jordana back from maternity leave and won ‘Best Hair Salon’ at the Surrey Awards 2023! It’s been an incredible summer for the salon, and we’ve just heard that Jamie Benny, our Artistic Director, has finalised for ‘London Hairdresser of the Year’ at the British Hairdressing Awards. This is a huge achievement for Jamie, in a highly contested category and we’re super proud of him. We are also delighted to announce that Emily Morris, is our first stylist to graduate from our Esher salon. She has worked incredibly hard throughout her time in the salon and we know she’ll be popular with our clients. We took the opportunity for Jamie and Emily to spend some time talking about their journeys at Hare & Bone.
Jamie: I’ve been with Hare & Bone for almost 9 years now. I worked with Sam previously, as his assistant, so when he opened his own salon there was no question that I wanted to be part of it. It’s important that assistants are given the opportunities and support required in order to develop their skills professionally.
Emily: I remember joining the Esher team in 2020. A career in hairdressing was something I had always been interested in so when I saw the Hare & Bone brand had opened here, I applied for the assistant’s position. The team have always made me feel so welcome and involved me in all aspects of the industry; from salon work, photographic shoots, local events and even fashion week.
Jamie: Yeah, as an aspirational brand that is involved in the fashion world it’s important that our full team get to experience the opportunities that Sam’s reputation allows us. You should feel really proud to have graduated, Emily. It takes dedication to learn and perfect all the various hairdressing techniques required to work at Hare & Bone. As an aspirational brand, we always need to be offering the very best in professional skills, product knowledge and trends to our clients, but having seen you in action I know you’re ready to take on your own clients.
Emily: Thanks Jamie, that means a lot coming from you! I’ve really enjoyed all my learnings and excited about taking on new clients. I can’t even begin to imagine how it feels to be a finalist at the British Hairdressing Awards. Are you nervous?
Jamie: I’m grateful. But probably will be a little nervous as the weeks go by. We don’t find out who the winners are until the end of November so just now I’m just enjoying the moment and happy that my work has been recognised by my peers.
