PINK’S COMEBACK
Pink has smashed it out of the park with her first hit single from her seventh studio album ‘Beautiful Trauma’. The inaugural summer single ‘What About Us’ a beautiful club ballad, made it to number one in 3 countries and the Top 10 in a further 9.
Grammy-award winning Pink really is one of the most exceptional singer, songwriters and performers of our time and this seventh offering marks a long 5 year wait for fans since her last album release date (‘The Truth About Love’ was released back in 2012) and it has been well worth the wait. In her usual style, she co-wrote all the songs on the album too.
Pink, real name Alecia Beth Moore, has sold over 47 million albums worldwide to date, including over 16 million albums in the United States alone. Her career accolades include three Grammy Awards, a Brit Award, an Emmy Award and seven MTV Video Music Awards (including the acclaimed Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award).
In 2009, Billboard named Pink the ‘Pop Songs Artist of the Decade’. She was also the second most-played female solo artist in the United Kingdom during the 2000s decade, behind Madonna.
GIRL BAND ROOTS
Pink first rised to fame as part of a put together RnB girl group called Choice in 1995. Using her stage name Pink which she coined from the Quentin Tarantino film ‘Reservoir Dogs’ Mr Pink character aged 14, she clearly stood out from the other girls as she admitted, “I was extreme. I went through phases from skateboarder, to hip-hopper, to rave child, to lead singer in a band. I did it all, and all at the same time! I mean I was mean!”
When the girl group disbanded in 1998 she was the only member to get a shot at a solo career and released her first album, ‘Can’t Take Me Home’ in 2000 under La Reid’s La Face Records which, luckily for the star, went multi-platinum.
Her stock well on the rise saw her release Missundaztood in 2001 with 12 million album sales and 3 Top 10 single hits including ‘Get The Party Started,’ ‘Just Like a Pill’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Get Me.’
Pink was now a certified household name.
LOVE LIFE
Pink had a string of failed relationships in the early part of her career before she met professional motocross racer Carey Hart at the X Games in Philadelphia in 2001. Following a brief separation in 2003, Pink proposed to Hart in 2005 during the Mammoth Lakes motocross race. While she was assisting in his race she wrote “Will You Marry Me? I’m serious!” on a pit board.
Hart initially didn’t notice and continued the race for another lap. When he did notice, he immediately veered off the track to accept right there and then. Pink made him finish the race because she refused to “marry a loser!”
The couple wed in a ceremony in Puerto Rico in 2006 and they had daughter Willow in 2011 and son Jameson in 2016. Hart has also starred in two of Pink’s music videos as her love interest.
DON’T CHANGE
Pink is also an active PETA animal rights campaigner and is outspoken about LGBT rights and same sex marriages. Earlier this year she got personal in her speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, sharing a touching story about an experience she had with Willow. Speaking about self-image, conformity and the legacy of rock stars before her.
“Recently, I was driving my daughter to school and she said to me, out of the blue, ‘Mama?’ I said, ‘Yes, baby?’ She said, ‘I’m the ugliest girl I know.’ And I said, ‘Huh?’ And she was like, ‘Yeah, I look like a boy with long hair.’ And my brain went to, ‘Oh my god, you’re six. Why? Where is this coming from? Who said this? Can I kick a 6-year-old’s ass, like what?’
But I didn’t say anything. Instead I went home and I made a Powerpoint presentation for her. And in that presentation were androgynous rock stars and artists that live their truth, are probably made fun of every day of their life, and carry on, wave their flag and inspire the rest of us. And these are artists like Michael Jackson and David Bowie and Freddie Mercury and Annie Lennox and Prince and Janis Joplin and George Michael, Elton John, so many artists — her eyes glazed over. But then I said, ‘You know, I really want to know why you feel this way about yourself.’ And she said, ‘Well I look like a boy,’ and I said, ‘Well what do you think I look like?’ And she said, ‘Well you’re beautiful.’ And I was like, ‘Well, thanks. But when people make fun of me, that’s what they use. They say I look like a boy or I’m too masculine or I have too many opinions, my body is too strong.’
And I said to her, ‘Do you see me growing my hair?’ She said, ‘No, mama.’ I said, ‘Do you see me changing my body?’ ‘No, mama.’ ‘Do you see me changing the way I present myself to the world?’ ‘No, mama.’ ‘Do you see me selling out arenas all over the world?’ ‘Yes, Mama.’ ‘OK! So, baby girl. We don’t change. We take the gravel and the shell and we make a pearl. And we help other people to change so they can see more kinds of beauty.’
And to all the artists here, I’m so inspired by all of you. Thank you for being your true selves and for lighting the way for us. I’m so inspired by you guys. There’s so much rad shit happening in music. And keep doing it. Keep shining for the rest of us to see. And you, my darling girl, are beautiful, and I love you!” she said.
The guests all gave her a standing ovation and Pink filled the news headlines the next day in her typical style.
2018 ARENA TOUR
Pink has also just announced a 40-date arena tour of the US and a further multiple arena concert in Australia from July to September 2018 where she has a huge fanbase and even a pink bathroom decorated in pink (of course!) at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
Pink’s album was released on October 13 and went straight into the number one spot in the Top 10 album chart. She is pretty chuffed with the way the album turned out saying, “I’m certifiably, insanely proud of this album. It’s been a while, and I’m grateful for all the years we’ve had. Looking forward to the next chapter with you.”
